FALLS CHURCH, VA – The Choralis Foundation has announced that the premiere award given out at its annual Greater Washington DC Area Choral Excellence Awards – the award for Outstanding Contributions to Choral Music – will be renamed The J. Reilly Lewis Award for Choral Excellence, in honor and memory of the late Dr. J. Reilly Lewis, whose untimely death occurred on June 9. Read more »

J. Reilly Lewis, the founding Music Director of Washington Bach Consort and the Music Director of the Cathedral Choral Society, died unexpectedly on Thursday, June 9, in Arlington, VA at his home. He was 71. Reilly was beloved in the Washington, DC music community. He was a vibrant, talented musician, passionate about his work, known for his generosity of spirit and joyful soul by his many friends, family, and everyone with whom he came into contact. He deeply loved music and people, and was thrilled to be able to dedicate his life to both. Read more »

Performances of Johann Sebastian Bach’s transcendent 18 Chorale Preludes don’t come along every day. Audiences rarely hear this music, especially in its massive entirety. And only sporadically do listeners crowd into churches for organ recitals, as many musicians lament. But organist J. Reilly Lewis, director of the Washington Bach Consort and of the Cathedral Choral Society, drew a capacity audience Sunday at the National Presbyterian Church in Northwest Washington. Read more »
